Aztec Organized Religion
Aztec human sacrifice
One of the mot unique things about the Aztec is their religion. Their beliefs were based on the way they saw the world. The Aztecs thought that life had to be balanced. Life had to equal death. The also believed in gods. Not only this, but they were also aware of the destructive aspects of nature. They thought that if, suddenly, there was more life then death, of vice versa, they gods would destroy them. They didn't necessarily think that the gods would come down to earth and kill them, so much as take away their rain so there crops would dwindle and they would all starve. Essentially resulting in death. They also thought that they were the children of the gods. A legacy has it that the gos decided to make humans, so they sculpted them from clay. But, these clay people were to soulless so they destroyed them. Next, the gods tried making humans from wood. Although the wood people had feelings and emotion, they were weak. The gods also destroyed these people. So, finally, the gods decided to make humans from maze (corn) and their own blood. These people were perfect. The gods had made a sacrifice to create these people, now the people had to pay them back. The Aztecs did this by humane sacrifice. Because the Aztecs conquered so many other civilizations, they had prisoners. And, now that they owed the gods, these prisoners would become their sacrifices. The most common way to sacrifice someone back then, was to kill them and then throw them from the top of a pyramid. Along with human sacrifice, the Aztecs may have been cannibals. Evidence supports this because Aztec bones have been found with humane teeth marks.
Although the Aztec religion may have been brutal and violent, it is also one of the most defining things about the Aztec. It even affected there monumental architecture.
